Police have registered a case against National Conference MP Agha Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and former Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattoo for allegedly spreading misleading information on social media in Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir. Jammu and Kashmir Police took this action late night on Tuesday (3 March) and separate FIRs have been registered against both the leaders at Cyber Police Station Srinagar.
According to the police, such posts had surfaced on digital and social media platforms in which false and misleading information was shared. Police said that they had received strong inputs that some posts could create fear and instability among people.
Police said in a statement issued on social media platform X that false and fabricated content was spread with the intention of creating fear, affecting public order and promoting illegal activities.
According to the police, initial investigation revealed that unverified information was shared in these posts, due to which there was a possibility of confusion among the people and unrest in the society.
FIR lodged
Police said that two separate FIRs have been registered in this case in the Cyber Police Station of Srinagar. A case has been registered under sections 197(1)(d) and 353(1)(b) of the Indian Justice Code. Investigation of both the cases has been started under FIR number 02/2026 and FIR number 03/2026.
Police say that further action will be taken on the basis of investigation. Police also said that such attempts to spread misinformation can pose a serious threat to peace, security and social stability.
Claim of reducing security in social media posts
Actually, this entire controversy started when MP Agha Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and former Mayor Junaid Azim Mattoo posted on social media platform X claiming that their security had been reduced or withdrawn. After these posts, the matter quickly came into discussion and the police registered a case considering it as misleading information.
I don’t care about these things – MP Mehdi
Responding to this matter, MP Mehdi said that he does not care about these small things. He said that he has no fear of the presence or absence of security personnel around him.
He said that as a citizen of the country, he will continue to exercise his rights and raise his voice against injustice, violation of law and democracy. Mehdi wrote on social media that some people think that by reducing his security or suspending his Facebook account, he will stop speaking, but that is not going to happen.
‘Attempts are being made to silence me’- Mattu
Former Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattoo also gave his reaction on social media. He claimed that his security has been withdrawn due to his statements on Iran-related issues and international events.
Mattu said that this step has been taken with the aim of silencing him. He also alleged that the government is maintaining its silence on international events. Amidst this entire matter, the police has also appealed to the common people to check the authenticity of any information before sharing it on social media.
Police say that sharing unverified information can lead to confusion, tension and law and order situation in the society. Therefore, citizens should use social media responsibly.
