Every year lakhs of youth dream of joining this service and work hard for it. But many people have this question in their mind that when a candidate becomes an IAS, which is the first post he gets after training and how is he promoted further.
When a candidate becomes an IAS by passing the UPSC Civil Services Examination, first of all he is sent for training. This training takes place at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration located in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand. Here they are given information about administration, law, government schemes and public related works.
After completion of training, the IAS officer is given his first field posting. Generally this posting is on the post of Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Assistant Collector or Joint Magistrate. On this post, the officer is given the responsibility of a part of a district. During this time the officers understand the administrative work closely. They have to do things like maintaining law and order, implementing government schemes and listening to people’s problems. This time is the most important period of learning for them.
Gets first promotion after a few years
When an IAS officer works for about 3 to 5 years, he gets his first promotion. After this he can be sent to a post like Additional District Magistrate (ADM) or Municipal Commissioner in any city. In this post his responsibilities increase more than before. They have to assist the Collector in the administrative work of the district and have a role in many important decisions.
Become DM with increasing experience
According to reports, after about 9 to 12 years of service, many IAS officers are made District Magistrate (DM) or Collector. This is the most important post of district administration. DM is the chief administrative officer of the entire district. He has the huge responsibility of law and order, development work, elections, disaster management and implementing government schemes.

After about 16 to 24 years of service, IAS officers can reach positions like Secretary or Commissioner in the state government. Some officers also get a chance to work in the Central Government, where they hold posts like Joint Secretary. Officers on these posts play an important role in making policies and implementing government schemes on a large scale.

When the experience of an IAS officer exceeds 25 years, he can get senior posts like Additional Secretary or Principal Secretary. This post is considered very important in both the state and central government. After this, some selected officers also reach the highest position in their career. The biggest post at the state level is that of Chief Secretary. The highest administrative post in the entire country is considered to be that of Cabinet Secretary.
How does promotion happen?
Promotion of IAS officers is done according to a fixed process. In this, their work experience, their working capacity and their work record are seen. Every year a confidential report of the work of the officers is prepared, which is called Annual Confidential Report (ACR). On the basis of this, it is decided when and to what post the officer will be promoted.
