Chief Justice of the country Surya Kant has emphasized on institutional reforms to increase the participation of women in the judiciary. He has asked the collegium of the High Courts to seriously consider appointing qualified women lawyers as judges. He said that greater representation of women in the judiciary is linked to the confidence of the 65 crore mothers, sisters and daughters of the country, who should be confident that the judicial system understands their realities and will treat them fairly.
On Sunday (March 8, 2026), CJI Surya Kant said this while speaking on the topic ‘Half the Nation-Half the Bench, Bridge the Gap-Balance the Bench’ in the first conference of Indian Women in Law. The CJI emphasized that the Bar members should accept the simple reality that the women members are not asking for concessions.
CJI Surya Kant said, ‘She is demanding fair and proper representation, which is long pending. Only when the profession itself will internalize this truth will the path to reach the judiciary become clear. On this, the women lawyers and members of the judiciary present there applauded a lot.
Justice Surya Kant requested the Collegium of the High Courts to expand its scope of consideration and include women advocates from their respective states practicing in the Supreme Court for promotion. Justice Surya Kant had said that if progress is to be meaningful, it will have to be institutionalized. He said that the story should not be that any one person got more representation, rather it should be that the Supreme Court and High Courts across the country consciously incorporated impartiality into their processes.
The CJI said, ‘We all must understand that this kind of reform is not an accidental phenomenon; This is a continuous process. Promoting institutional fairness requires persistence beyond individual tenure and individual personality. This cannot be fully realized during my tenure, or during the tenure of my fellow judges. However, this cannot and should not determine the depth of our commitment.
Justice Surya Kant said that one area of improvement lies within the collegium of the High Courts and they have to understand that the time to act thoughtfully is now, not in the future. Senior advocates Shobha Gupta and Mahalakshmi Pavani, associated with the organization Indian Women in Law, welcomed the guests. Among the guests was former Chief Justice N.V. Raman and other retired judges of the Supreme Court were included. Apart from these, Justice B.V. Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuiyan were also included.
