The government has asked refiners and fuel retailers to give priority to delivering gas cylinders to homes first. Due to this, the supply of 19 kg commercial cylinders to hotels and restaurants has been reduced. In such a situation, shortage of commercial gas cylinders is being seen in big cities. The sudden shortage of commercial LPG cylinders has worried the entire hospitality sector.
Restaurant associations in Maharashtra and Karnataka have warned that if the supply is not improved, food shops may be closed within a few days. Industry representatives say that this disruption has started affecting operations in Mumbai and Bengaluru.
Restaurants on the verge of closure
According to media reports, India Hotels and Restaurants Association President Vijay Shetty said that the shortage is spreading rapidly and this sector may soon come to a standstill.
He said, “If this shortage continues, all restaurants in Mumbai will be closed in the next two days.” He also said that the association has written a letter to Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and is also in touch with Maharashtra Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal. Restaurant owners say that commercial LPG supply has largely stopped since Sunday, while domestic cylinders are being delivered in two to eight days after booking.
What is the government’s decision?
Let us tell you that India imports up to 90 percent of its LPG requirement from the Middle East. Due to tension there, the number of ships coming through the Strait of Hormuz has reduced. Amidst this limited supply, the government has decided to provide relief to domestic consumers because hotels or restaurants also have the option of large electric ovens, piped natural gas (PNG) and induction. Whereas at the domestic level, people mostly depend on 14.2 kg LPG cylinders. This is the reason why oil marketing companies like Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum have been instructed to give priority to domestic cooking gas supply amid supply shortage.
Officials said that to prevent hoarding by consumers, the waiting period for LPG delivery has been increased from 15 days to 25 days. Sources said India is looking for new international suppliers to stabilize LPG supply, which includes possible imports from Algeria, Australia, Canada and Norway. Also, oil marketing companies have been asked to increase LPG production and adjust their product mix to manage demand.
