In fact, Dubai’s port operating company DP World is planning to build a new port and container terminal on the east coast of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). According to the Financial Times report, the biggest objective of this project is to reduce dependence on the approximately 170 km long Strait of Hormuz and to create an alternative route for maritime trade.

According to the report, the company is in talks to build a new multipurpose port in the coastal area of Fujairah and a new container terminal on the already existing port there. However, the company has not yet officially announced this project.
Which port is being used now?
At present, Dubai’s Jebel Ali Port is the largest and major port in the DP world. Ships coming to and from this port have to pass through the Strait of Hormuz to exit the gulf. It is one of the busiest sea trade routes in the world and a large part of the global oil and gas supply also passes through this route. In such a situation, any kind of tension or disruption in this region can affect international trade.
