History of Bhawanipur assembly seat
According to PTI, for decades after the country’s independence, this seat in South Kolkata was a Congress stronghold and the home constituency of some of the most influential political figures of the state. Former Chief Minister Siddharth Shankar Roy contested and won this seat as a Congress candidate and later as an independent candidate. Other Congress stalwarts such as Meira Dutta Gupta and Rathin Talukdar also represented the constituency, cementing Bhawanipur’s reputation as one of the party’s major urban strongholds.
Bhawanipur remained firmly under the influence of Congress for many years. The Left could hold this seat only for a short time in 1969. When the name of this seat was changed to Kalighat constituency. CPI(M) leader Sadhan Gupta became India’s first visually impaired MP from this seat in 1953. Bhawanipur’s political journey took an unexpected turn in 1972, when the constituency disappeared from the electoral map after delimitation.
For almost 4 decades this seat existed only in political memory. It was revived again in the delimitation of 2011. During that time there was dramatic upheaval in the politics of Bengal. In the same year, the 34-year-old rule of the Left Front ended and the Mamata Banerjee era began.
