Before the West Bengal Assembly elections, the political picture of the state has become more complex. AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi announced on Sunday that his party will contest the West Bengal Assembly elections along with Humayun Kabir’s Aam Janata Unnayan Party. Owaisi said that he will hold a joint press conference with Humayun Kabir in Kolkata on March 25.
How many seats will AIMIM contest?
Announcing this alliance at the Eid Milap ceremony in Darussalam, Owaisi said that AIMIM will contest elections on about 8 seats as a partner in this alliance. These 8 seats of AIMIM will be 3 in Birbhum, 3 in Murshidabad and 2 in Malda.
Humayun Kabir is an MLA from Bharatpur and a former leader of Trinamool Congress. Trinamool had suspended him from the party after his controversial statement about building a new mosque on the lines of Babri Masjid in Murshidabad. After this he formed Aam Janata Unnayan Party in December 2024.
Aam Janta Unnayan Party will contest on 182 seats
Aam Janata Unnayan Party will contest elections on 182 seats alone. Humayun Kabir himself will contest from both Rezinagar and Naoda seats. Kabir claims that Muslim voters have a decisive influence in 114 assembly constituencies and they are dissatisfied with Trinamool. He even said that if his party comes to power, then for the first time a Muslim will be made the Chief Minister or Deputy Chief Minister.
West Bengal Assembly elections will be held in two phases on 23 April and 29 April 2026 and counting of votes will take place on 4 May. There are 294 seats in the state and the main contest is expected to be between Trinamool Congress and BJP.
This alliance of AIMIM and Aam Janata Unnayan Party can spoil the equations of both Trinamool Congress and BJP in Muslim dominated districts like Murshidabad, Malda and Birbhum. The complete disclosure of seat distribution is expected to be made in Owaisi’s Kolkata press conference on March 25.
