Congress Candidate Mahananda Sarkar nomination papers rejected: Congress has suffered a major setback before the Assam Assembly elections 2026. The nomination papers of party candidate Mahananda Sarkar from Barpeta seat were rejected during scrutiny on Wednesday.
According to election officials, the government’s nomination papers were declared invalid due to irregularities found in ‘Form-A’. This form is an important document of being an authorized candidate of a recognized political party. This decision was taken after a detailed hearing by the Returning Officer.
Officials said that due to discrepancies found in the documents, the nominations were canceled under the Representation of the People Act and the guidelines of the Election Commission.
“After completion of the scrutiny process, nomination of Congress candidate from Barpeta, Mahanand Sarkar, has been rejected due to irregularities in Form-A,” an official said.
After this decision, Congress has been out of an important contest in Barpeta even before the voting, which has dealt a big blow to the party’s prospects.
According to sources, the discrepancy in Form-A came to light during verification, after which an objection was lodged and a detailed investigation was conducted. During the hearing, arguments were presented by the Congress, but the Returning Officer considered the objections to be valid and rejected the nomination.
However, no official statement has yet come from Congress in this matter. Party insiders called it “unfortunate” and said they were considering legal options, including approaching the Election Commission.
Barpeta is considered a politically important seat and after this development there is a possibility of changing the electoral equation here, due to which other candidates can get benefit.
