Why Breast Cancer Spreads To Lungs: Breast cancer among women tops the list of cancer deaths and cases in India and across the world. When breast cancer spreads to other parts of the body, it becomes more dangerous. Lungs are among those organs where this cancer spreads the most. Doctors have known for a long time that cancer becomes difficult to treat once it reaches the lungs, but until now it was not completely clear why tumors grow so fast there.
What came out in the research?
Recently, research at the University of Colorado Cancer Center has made an important discovery on this. According to this study published in Cancer Research Community, breast cancer cells start using the natural repair system of the lungs to their advantage. Actually, the lungs have a special ability to heal themselves quickly. When the air sacs i.e. alveoli get damaged, the body immediately starts the process of repairing them. This process is very important for breathing and keeping the lungs healthy.

Why does tumor spread easily?
But when cancer cells reach the lungs, they disrupt this healing system. The process which normally goes on for some time, remains active continuously in the presence of cancer. This maintains inflammation and creates an environment in which tumors start growing easily. Research also revealed that alveolar type-2 cells play an important role in this entire process. These cells normally help in repairing the lungs, but in the presence of cancer, they start releasing signals that promote tumors. At the same time, cancer cells also maintain contact with them, due to which this cycle continues continuously.
What is the way to avoid it?
To solve this problem, scientists tested a drug roflumilast, which is already used in the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Experiments found that this drug can slow down the growth of tumors in the lungs, because it changes the environment favorable for cancer. This method is different from traditional treatment, where an attempt is made to directly eliminate cancer cells. The focus here is on stopping the support system that helps cancer grow. At present this research is in the initial stage and more tests are necessary to implement it on humans.
