Amidst the election atmosphere in Jorhat, Assam, the Congress Party on Friday (April 3, 2026) has fiercely targeted the state’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Regarding the BJP government, Congress said that this government has not become a government of double engine, but of double loot and double deception, which has hurt the public trust.
BJP accused of suppressing public voice and corruption
Actually, a press conference was organized at Congress Bhawan in Jorhat on Friday (April 3, 2026). In this press conference, former Rajasthan MLA and All India Congress Committee (AICC) national secretary Divya Maderna spoke in detail on the current situation in the state. During this, AICC media co-ordinator Harmeet Baweja and Jorhat media chairman Trishanku Sharma were also present with him.
While addressing the press conference, Divya Maderna reiterated her resolve for a safe Assam and made a scathing attack on the state government. He said that this government has not become a government of double engine, but of double loot and double deception, which has hurt the public trust.
He alleged that the voices of about 3.5 crore people of Assam are being suppressed. Especially the youth are the most affected, whose future is being played with. Expressing concern over the increasing corruption in the state, he said that the government is busy hiding it instead of exposing it.
Questions on governance and development
Taking aim at the rule of the BJP government in the state for the last decade, he said that the self-respect of Assam has weakened and the government is limited to mere lip service. According to him, there is a lack of good governance in the state and priority is being given to religious and political issues instead of development issues, due to which the real problems are being left behind.
Syndicate rule and decline in development indices
Divya Maderna alleged that syndicate rule is dominant in Assam, where illegal networks are active in sectors like coal, betel nut and sand. Citing the NITI Aayog report, he said that Assam reaching 23rd position reflects the real situation of the state.
Economic crisis and increasing debt
Expressing concern over the economic condition of the state, he said that the economy of Assam is in ICU (Intensive Care Unit). The debt on the state has increased to approximately Rs 2 lakh crore. He also said that every newborn child has an average debt of Rs 57,000, which shows the failure of the government’s economic policies.
Unemployment and social crisis
Attacking the government on the issue of employment, he said that more than 21 lakh youth are unemployed in the state, while employment opportunities are very limited. He also expressed concern over the increasing cases of suicide among the youth and called it a serious social crisis.
Impact on education system
Divya Maderna alleged that 8,000 to 9,000 government schools have been closed in Assam. Due to this, the education of poor and rural students is being affected. Due to this, the dominance of private schools is increasing and education is becoming expensive.

Raising questions on the health system, he said that there is a shortage of medical staff by 97% in government hospitals. Also, the maternal mortality rate is higher than the national average, which reflects the weak state of health services.
status of tea garden workers
Raising the issue of tea garden workers, he said that the workers were promised a daily wage of Rs 351, but even today they are getting only about Rs 250. He also said that 57% of women in tea gardens suffer from anemia, which is a serious social problem.
Questions on Prime Minister’s visit and flood issue
Taking a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tours, Congress leaders said that these tours are limited only to photo sessions and problems are not solved at the ground level. On the issue of floods, he questioned the government’s claim of making Assam flood free by 2031 and said whether the flood affected people will have to wait till then?
Demand for change and resolve for a safe Assam
Congress leaders said that the present government has deeply hurt the development and public confidence of Assam. Reiterating his resolve for a safe Assam, he said that the people of the state now want change and will give a clear answer to it in the coming times.
Before the start of the election riots in the state, this statement of the Congress Party has once again brought issues like development, employment, education and health to the center stage in the politics of Assam. Due to this, the political atmosphere is likely to become more heated in the coming times.
