‘Tamil Nadu will not remain silent’, Stalin’s open warning to Modi government on delimitation, said- every family will take to the streets

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has made a direct attack on the Central Government regarding the proposed delimitation. He has warned in clear words that if this process harms the interests of Tamil Nadu or the southern states, there will be a massive agitation in the state and the entire state may come to a standstill.

MK Stalin released a video on April 14 and said, ‘At this time I want to say something important to the BJP government at the Center and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Our MPs will participate in the Parliament session. If anything is done that harms Tamil Nadu or disproportionately increases the political power of the northern states, we in Tamil Nadu will not remain silent. His warning has come at a time when the special session of Parliament is going to start from April 16, in which discussion on important amendments related to delimitation and women’s reservation is proposed.

Tamil Nadu will come to a standstill – Stalin bluntly

Stalin made it clear in his message that this is not just a political statement but a serious warning. He said, ‘Tamil Nadu will register its protest with full force. Every family will take to the streets. Under my leadership as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, we will launch a big movement. He further said, ‘If any step is taken to harm Tamil Nadu or if the political power of the northern states is disproportionately increased, Tamil Nadu will come to a standstill.’ This statement clearly indicates that DMK does not want to limit this issue to just political debate, but is preparing to turn it into a mass movement.

Delimitation is being done secretly – Stalin’s allegation

Stalin accused the central government of keeping the delimitation process confidential and taking it forward without consulting the states. He said, ‘The proposed delimitation process has been kept confidential and the BJP-led central government is trying to push it forward unilaterally without consulting any political party or state.’ He also alleged that the special session of Parliament is being called forcibly between elections so that the constitutional amendment can be passed quickly.

Attack on democracy and states’ rights: MK Stalin

CM MK Stalin called this step not just an administrative process but a direct attack on democracy. He said, ‘This hasty attempt to push through delimitation is an open attack on democracy by the BJP government. More than this, it is a direct attack on the rights of the states. We don’t even know how this process will be implemented. He reminded that the southern states had adopted population control measures on the advice of the Centre, but now there is a danger of their political stake reducing due to the same.

This is the final warning – message to Modi government

Taking aim at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said in a strong tone, ‘If Tamil Nadu is affected, we will make the entire country realize it. PM Modi, I repeat again that this is the final warning given to you by Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu will fight, Tamil Nadu will win. Don’t take this as a threat, this is a warning. For us, principles do not matter, not power. States’ rights matter.

Why is this controversy important after PM’s clarification?

After the proposed delimitation, the number of Lok Sabha seats may increase from 543 to 850. It is believed that on the basis of population, northern states will get more seats, while the representation of southern states may be less. This is the reason why many southern states including Tamil Nadu are calling it a threat of political imbalance.

However, PM Modi said in his Kerala rally that the number of Lok Sabha seats in the South Indian states which have successfully controlled the population will not be reduced and the total number of seats will be increased to benefit the states across the country. He said that false rumors are being spread that the number of seats in South Indian states will be reduced due to population control, but this is completely untrue.

PM Modi has made it clear that this expansion will ensure that despite the success in population control, there will be no reduction in the number of seats in South Indian states. Parliament will take steps to ensure that his seat remains completely safe. The Prime Minister said that states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Goa and Telangana have done good work towards population control. Even if their population growth is low, none of their Lok Sabha seats should be reduced.
