The Election Commission will investigate the opposition’s complaint that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address to the nation was a violation of the election code of conduct. Commission sources gave this information on Tuesday. Left parties have written a letter to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar alleging that Prime Minister Modi’s address to the nation on Saturday is a violation of the model code of conduct related to elections and action should be taken against it.
General Secretary of Marxist Communist Party (CPI-M) M.A. Baby and Communist Party of India (CPI) Rajya Sabha MP P. Sandosh Kumar have complained to the Election Commission in separate letters. Voting has taken place in Assam, Kerala and Puducherry, while voting will take place in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal on 23 April. The second and last phase of voting in West Bengal will be held on April 29.
Sources said the complaint against the Prime Minister will be ‘investigated’ by the Model Code of Conduct Division of the Election Commission. The election code of conduct came into force on March 15 with the announcement of the election schedule and will remain in force till May 4, when votes for the five assemblies will be counted.
CPI(M)’s allegation, PM Modi violated the code of conduct
Around 700 separate activists and common citizens have approached the Election Commission over the alleged violations. CPI(M) general secretary Baby said in his letter that the Prime Minister has grossly violated the code and for this Doordarshan was “misused” for political speech. He said, “This address cannot be called a government address in any way.”
Baby alleged that the speech was clearly political in that it targeted opposition parties, took names of several parties and tried to influence public opinion, including voters in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, in favor of the ruling party.
What did PM Modi say in his address to the nation?
In his address to the nation last Saturday, Prime Minister Modi had warned the Congress and its allies that the women of India will definitely punish them for the ‘sin of feticide’ they have committed by opposing the amendment related to women’s reservation in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.
Modi had apologized to the women and said that even though the government could not get the bill passed, it would never give up its efforts to empower women. The Constitution Amendment Bill related to implementing 33 percent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies from the 2029 parliamentary elections could not be passed in the Lower House of Parliament on Friday.
