West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026: There is political turmoil among political parties on many issues regarding the assembly elections to be held in West Bengal. A major issue in this conflict is regarding non-vegetarian food. The ruling Trinamool Congress in Bengal alleges that if BJP comes to power, it will ban eating meat and fish. Meanwhile, BJP MP Anurag Thakur also gave a political message while eating traditional fish and rice in a press conference held in Kolkata on Tuesday (April 21, 2026). He clearly said that Trinamool Congress is trying to spread confusion and fear regarding food and drink in the state.
Anurag Thakur’s attack on Mamata Banerjee government
Anurag Thakur said, ‘We are eating meat, fish and rice. BJP is in government in 16 states and NDA is in 20 states, but there is no restriction on anyone’s food, worship or expression anywhere. His allegation was that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has no concrete achievements during her 15 years of rule, hence she is doing politics of fear, confusion and rumours.

He also raised questions on the law and order and economic condition of the state. Thakur said, ‘There is an atmosphere of crime and corruption here. Because of this, investment is not coming and the youth are being brain drained. People are leaving the state. Hinting about the upcoming political change, he said that come May 4, TMC will go.

Expected development of fishery industry in Bengal has not happened: Harsh Vardhan
At the same time, Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Vardhan Shringla also expressed his views on this issue. Highlighting the difference between the fish culture and industry of Bengal, he said, ‘I like every kind of fish, be it Chingdi, Magur, Pabda, Rohu or Katla, but sadly, in Bengal, where there are seas, rivers and ponds, the fish industry has not developed at the expected level.’

Shringla claimed that the fish he gets in Siliguri comes from Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Gujarat. He said, ‘I asked where is the fish of Bengal? So the answer was that there is no fish here. Because TMC did not invest in fisheries and ignored the farmers.
In Kolkata, this picture of fish and rice is not just a cultural symbol, but has become a part of election rhetoric, where everything from the plate of food to the issue of development seems to be becoming the center of political discussion.
