Iran executed a man early in the morning on Wednesday (April 22, 2026) who was convicted of spying for Israel. The country’s judiciary identified the man as Mehdi Farid. The court also said that convict Mehdi Farid had maintained online contact with officials of Israel’s intelligence agency Mossad.
According to Iran International report, the Iranian judiciary said that Farid was the head of the administrative department of a non-military defense management committee in a sensitive organization of the country. Although the name of the organization was not made public, the culprit was accused of sharing information related to organizational structure, security arrangements and infrastructure.
Farid used to work in Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization
According to the report, human rights groups said that Farid was arrested in the year 2023 and he worked in the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran. Farid was first kept in Gretan Tehran prison in the capital Tehran, after which he was shifted to Evin prison.

Iran Human Rights presented a report last year, under which Farid was initially sentenced to 10 years in prison and later given the death penalty after reconsideration on charges of spying for Israel’s Mossad.
Farid confessed in the court to passing information to Mossad
The Iranian court said that Farid, on the instructions of an officer of the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad, had linked internal servers with infected files and made possible external access to the system through a USB device. It was also said that during the hearing of the case, Farid had confessed to passing on sensitive information related to Iran to Mossad and in return he was promised money to help him get out of the country. However, human rights groups have expressed concerns about forced confessions and the judicial process in Iran.
