In 2016, a person in Las Vegas, USA, tried to kill Trump by snatching a gun from the police, but he was immediately caught. Then two years later, i.e. in 2018, suspicious parcels were sent to many American leaders, which contained a chemical poison called ricin. In 2024, a bullet was fired at Trump at a Pennsylvania rally and missed his ear. Now on the night of April 25, the sound of gunshots echoed in Trump’s party. After all, why the world’s most powerful President Donald Trump is being attacked again and again and why there was a lapse in his security, you will know in the explainer…
Question 1: What happened at Trump’s party at Hilton Hotel in Washington?
answer: The White House Correspondents’ Dinner was going on at around 8:35 pm on April 25, 2026 (Saturday). This annual event was taking place in the ballroom of the Washington Hilton Hotel. President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, cabinet ministers and more than two thousand guests (journalists, celebrities, politicians) were present there. Dinner was going on, burrata salad was being served, music was playing. Suddenly ‘pop-pop’ sounds came from outside. The guests first thought that the tray had fallen, but it soon became clear that firing was taking place.
A total of 7 rounds were fired. The guests hid under the table, plates started breaking and screams were heard. Security agents immediately surrounded Trump and Melania and removed them from the stage. JD Vance and other cabinet ministers were also taken out safely one by one. The entire ballroom was locked down. Only one security agent was injured, but his bulletproof jacket saved his life. Trump and none of the guests were injured.
CNN’s White House Chief Correspondent Caitlin Collins said, we were inside the ballroom of the Hilton. Within minutes of the shots being heard, agents surrounded the room and came running down the main corridor as Cabinet officials sat at various points throughout the room. Many people remained lying on the ground and hiding under the tables while the President was being taken out of the stage.

Question 2: Who was the person who opened fire at Trump’s party and how did he attack?
answer: The name of the attacker is Cole Thomas Allen. Age 31 years, resident of Torrance (Los Angeles Suburb), California. He was a part-time teacher and worked in a tuition company named C2 Education. He was chosen ‘Teacher of the Month’ in December 2024. He was also an independent video game developer. He had sold a game named ‘Bohrdom’ on Steam and was making another game called ‘First Law’.
According to public records, Allen received a mechanical engineering degree from the California Institute of Technology in 2017. In 2025, he completed his Masters in Computer Science from California State University Dominguez Hills. Also did internship in NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. In 2014, a prototype of a wheelchair emergency brake was published in the local newspaper.
The American investigating agency has no criminal record against Allen. Alan’s friends and teachers describe him as ‘very quiet, polite, always sitting in the front row, a good boy who emails and asks questions’. Also donated $25 to Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign in 2024.
According to Police Department Interim Chief Jeffrey Carroll, Allen was a hotel guest. He had booked the room on the 10th floor a day in advance. Before the start of dinner (8 pm), he had assembled the ‘long weapon’ (shotgun) in a lightly guarded area. Security was focused on the protesters outside. By chance:
- Allen quickly passed the security guards, reached outside the ballroom and started firing.
- He had a shotgun, handgun and several knives.
- He deliberately used buckshot so that it would penetrate walls less and cause less unwanted damage.
- CCTV showed that he moved ahead while firing from the security. The sounds of 7 rounds echoed inside.
- Security responded immediately and caught him.
- Trump later said that the attacker was caught and he is undergoing treatment in the hospital.
Question 3: Why did Allen attack Trump’s party?
answer: Allen emailed a 1,056-word manifesto to the family 10 minutes before the attack. He described himself as ‘Cole Coldforce – Friendly Federal Killer Alan’. In the manifesto he clearly said, ‘I am a citizen of America. What my representatives do affects me too. I will no longer allow my hands to be involved in the crimes of any pedophile, rapist or traitor.
Accusing the Trump administration, she said that rape, execution without trial, school children being blown up, children dying of starvation and young girls are being tortured in detention camps. He wrote that violence is justified only when one is oppressed. To remain silent when others are being accused is assistance in crime.
He had made a hit list, starting from the highest ranking officers and moving towards the bottom. However, he left out FBI Director Kash Patel. Did not want to target guests, hotel staff or security, but was ready to reach the target by ‘surpassing everyone’ if necessary. He wrote that the world should not think about him but about the victims. Before the attack he ‘felt nauseous’, wanted to cry, but was angry.

Question 4: Why are there repeated lapses in the security of the world’s most powerful person?
answer: The Hilton Hotel was closed to the public from 2 pm. Only hotel guests, those with tickets, those with WHCA documents or those with reception invites could come inside. When the President sat down after the dinner started, they started removing the metal detectors because now no new guest could come. A complete perimeter was made around the President’s table in the ballroom, armored plates were installed, heavily armed agents were deployed in front and on the sides of the stage. About 100 agents were at this event. Trump later said, ‘The Secret Service saved my life. His reaction time was very fast.
It is noteworthy that this was the third attack on Trump. Earlier, on July 13, 2024, Trump was fatally attacked during an election rally in Pennsylvania. While addressing a campaign rally in Butler city, an attacker opened fire with an assault rifle from a distance of 400 feet, in which one bullet touched the upper part of Trump’s right ear. There have been attacks on the Pennsylvania rally and then on Palm Beach, Florida.

Allen also took a dig at the negligence of security in the manifesto, saying, ‘I thought there would be cameras at every corner, bugged rooms, armed agents every 10 feet, metal detectors, but nothing was found.’
There are four major reasons for the lapse in Trump’s security:
- Event Specific Risk: Security cannot be 100% everywhere. In venues like hotels, guests can check-in in advance.
- Focus out: More attention on protesters and new guests, less on old guests.
- Human Error: No matter how many agents there are, small mistakes in radio, communication and planning can lead to major accidents.
- More danger to Trump: Trump is a controversial leader. Security increased after 2024. Agents were also increased along with drones and guns for their security, but still a mistake was made.
Trump himself said, ‘The presidency is a dangerous profession, but we will not give up.’ The Secret Service’s mission is ‘zero failure’, but human errors do happen. This time also the security worked and the attacker was caught. The VIPs were evacuated safely, but the incident once again reminded that any lapse in security could be fatal. Investigation is going on and it is hoped that such negligence will not happen in future.
Question 5: How is the security of the American President, the most powerful person in the world?
answer: According to The White House, the American President is considered the most powerful person in the world, but his security is equally strong and layered. This work is done by US Secret Service.
- Advance Team: Wherever the President goes, the team goes there first. Hotel, hall, route, everything is checked. Motorcade routes are blocked, hospitals are fixed, staircases are pressurized checked.
- Counter-Sniper, Counter-Assault and Counter-Surveillance Teams: Snipers, attack prevention teams and surveillance teams are deployed on rooftops.
Magnetometer (Metal Detector): Every guest at the President’s party has to go through this. It is the responsibility of the Secret Service and TSA (Airport Security) people. - Armored Protection: There are armored plates under the President’s table, agents in front and sides of the stage, counter-assault agents with bulletproof vests.
- President’s Car: Trump’s car ‘The Beast’ is a special limousine equipped with bulletproof, anti-missile and excellent features.
- Training: The training of the agents deployed in the President’s security is very strict. It’s not a 9-5 job, it’s a lifestyle. Every year the President and his family are made to practice in a fake hotel and amphitheater at a secret location in Maryland.
