UP IPS Ajay Pal Sharma is embroiled in controversies during the West Bengal elections. An application has been filed against him in the Supreme Court, demanding that he be immediately removed from election duty. The petitioner has alleged that his role as a police observer was not impartial and he did things like putting pressure on the candidates, which has affected the election environment.
The petitioner made these allegations
The petition says that this is a violation of the right to free and fair elections. The case has been filed in the Supreme Court and a demand has been made to give necessary instructions from the court. However, the Supreme Court has not yet taken any cognizance of this, only e-filing has been done.
Accused of influencing elections
The petition said that Ajay Pal Sharma, who is called ‘Singham of UP’ because of his encounter record, has lost his impartiality as an observer of the Election Commission. He is accused of intimidating political candidates and putting undue pressure on them ever since he took charge of South 24 Parganas district. The petitioner claims that Sharma is using his power to influence the election, which is against the process of a free election.
It was said in the petition that the presence of Ajay Pal Sharma has spoiled the election atmosphere, due to which public confidence in the fairness of the 2026 assembly elections is being shaken. Alleged that due to his intimidation and biased behavior all the candidates are not getting ‘level playing field’.
