West Bengal Election Results 2026: Despite defeat in West Bengal elections, Mamata Banerjee has refused to resign. He alleged that the Prime Minister, the Home Minister and the Election Commission played a role in his defeat. Mamta Banerjee clearly said that she will not go to Lok Bhavan and resign, because according to her she has not actually lost the election.
BJP has strongly criticized his statement. BJP leader Sambit Patra called it worrying and ridiculous. He said that India is known for democracy in the world and such a statement is against the spirit of the Constitution. Giving examples, he said that other leaders have resigned peacefully after the defeat, but Mamata Banerjee’s stance shows “entitlement”.

Sambit Patra further said that no leader is indispensable in Indian democracy and it is wrong to think that the government cannot run without any one person. He also questioned Mamata Banerjee’s statement that she will not go to the Assembly, and said that it is unfair to think so. Besides, he also commented on the ‘Indi alliance’ and said that it is only a cosmetic alliance, where the leaders keep speaking against each other.
Terming Mamata Banerjee’s statement as “anarchic”, the BJP leader said that claiming moral victory is a different matter, but it is important to respect the official results. He stressed that there are clear provisions in the Constitution and transfer of power should take place accordingly. According to him, not accepting defeat shows dictatorial tendencies and is against democratic traditions.
What allegations did Mamta make?
Mamata Banerjee has clearly refused to resign from the post of Chief Minister after the defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections. He described the election results as “not a mandate but a conspiracy” and alleged that the defeat of his party Trinamool Congress was not done in a fair manner. Mamata Banerjee said that there is no need for her to resign, because according to her, “we have not lost, but have been robbed of votes.”
He alleged that there were large-scale irregularities during the elections and in the vote counting process. He claims that the mandate on about 100 seats was “looted” and the pace of counting was deliberately kept slow. He also said that his fight was not with the Bharatiya Janata Party, but with the Election Commission, which was allegedly working in favor of the BJP.
In the elections, BJP won a clear majority by winning 207 seats in the 294-member assembly and ended the 15-year-long TMC rule in the state. Despite this, Mamata Banerjee said that she will not accept this result and is considering constitutional options.
Signaling a strategic change, Mamata Banerjee now talked about focusing on national politics and strengthening the opposition ‘India’ alliance. He told that leaders like Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal, Uddhav Thackeray, Akhilesh Yadav and Hemant Soren have contacted him and expressed their support. Also, she announced her adoption of an agitating stance and said that now she would “take to the streets and fight.” He also announced the formation of a 10-member committee to investigate the post-poll violence and asked to visit the affected areas.
