Former Governor of Tripura Tathagata Roy has given his reaction regarding the victory of BJP in West Bengal and the stubborn attitude of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He recalled the long struggle of BJP in Bengal and expressed hope that the new government will take the state to the top.
Former Governor Tathagata Roy, while talking to news agency IANS, gave his answers on many topics including violence-free elections, TMC’s allegations on the Election Commission of India and Mamata Banerjee’s statements after the defeat.
Question: BJP is going to form government in West Bengal for the first time. How do you see this political change?
answer: BJP’s struggle started a long time ago. Bharatiya Jana Sangh was formed in 1951 and its founder was Syama Prasad Mukherjee. This clearly means that BJP, which emerged from Bharatiya Jana Sangh, is a party of West Bengal only. After Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, no one could come who could handle the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. Due to this the party became very small. At one time the situation of BJP was similar to that of present Congress and CPM. BJP emerged after the Ram Mandir movement. The situation changed completely after Narendra Modi became Prime Minister in 2014.
In 2016, BJP performed well in Bengal and then the party’s graph continued to grow in the state. It was unfortunate that BJP could not win the elections in Bengal in 2021. However, since then BJP intensified its efforts. The leaders of the Center worked to strengthen the state unit. The victory of 2026 is the result of that.

Question: What are your expectations from the new government in the state?
answer: In the previous governments, work was done to push West Bengal back. This work was done first by CPM and then Trinamool Congress pushed the state back. It is expected that the new BJP government will lift West Bengal out of its situation. At present the law and order situation in the state is very bad. The BJP government will first have to improve the law and order situation of the state. Apart from this, strict action will also have to be taken against corruption and racketeering.
Question: How do you assess the role of the Election Commission in ensuring free, fair and violence-free elections?
answer: Certainly the Election Commission has conducted the elections well. CPM started increasing election violence in West Bengal since 1960. Violence continued during every election. During the elections in 1988, the claws of many people’s hands were cut off for voting for Congress. Congress also did not take any action against this. During the time of TMC, violence used to happen at any time, not just during elections. However, the Election Commission of India stopped it completely this time at the time of elections.

Question: Mamta Banerjee has made serious allegations against the Election Commission that she has not lost the elections, but has been defeated. How do you respond to these claims?
answer: Mamata Banerjee’s behavior is like that of a little girl. They should prove their allegations.
Question: Mamata Banerjee has said that she will not resign and has stressed that she is not defeated. How do you explain this stance?
answer: Mamata Banerjee alone cannot destroy the structure of the Constitution. The tenure of the current assembly will end on the 8th. According to the rules, after that the Chief Minister has to step down. As soon as the term of the Assembly ends, President’s rule is automatically imposed. After this, the Governor will call the largest party that wins the elections and then a new government will be formed.
Question: Do you think that Mamata Banerjee is repeating the behavior of US President Donald Trump, who once refused to resign?
answer: I think Mamata Banerjee’s mental condition is not good. One thing is clear that there is a lot of difference between the constitutions of America and India. Mamta Banerjee has lost the election, and she will have to step down.
Question: Rahul Gandhi has alleged irregularities in Bengal elections and said that opposition parties should not celebrate Mamata Banerjee’s defeat. This is not the defeat of Mamata Banerjee, but the defeat of the ‘India’ alliance. What is your reaction?
answer: Rahul Gandhi’s words have no meaning. I laugh after watching his interview.
