Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Saturday appointed TVK chief Vijay as the new Chief Minister of the state. TVK Chief Vijay will take oath as CM in Chennai today at 10 am. The Governor has given time to Vijay to get the trust vote on or before May 13.
After VCK and IUML announced their support to TVK to form the government, actor-politician Vijay on Saturday met Governor Arlekar and handed him letters from the parties promising unconditional support. Vijay met Tamil Nadu Congress Committee chief K. Selvaperunthagai and Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) State Secretary P. Shanmugam met the Governor along with leaders of allies.
VCK and Indian Union Muslim League have two seats each. With the support of both the parties, the number of seats of Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) has now increased to 120 in the 234-member assembly. The founding leader of TVK had urged the Governor to formally invite him to form the government. Vijay had come to meet the Governor at Lok Bhavan for the fourth time.
Vijay-led TVK, which emerged as the largest party in the assembly elections, initially had 108 seats, 10 less than the majority figure. After the TVK won its first assembly election, it had approached DMK’s allies Congress, CPI, CPI(M) and VCK and sought their support to form the government. However, Vijay, who has won two seats, will have to give up one of them. With this the number of party MLAs will reduce to 107. Parties supporting TVK – Congress has 5 MLAs and CPI, CPI(M) and VCK have 2 MLAs each.
