Today, when lakhs of students prepare for NEET with the dream of becoming a doctor, hardly anyone remembers when this examination started. There was a time when different states and institutions had separate examinations for admission to medical colleges. Somewhere the form is different, somewhere the rules are different and somewhere the fees are different. To end this confusion and confusion, a big initiative was taken.
In India, NEET i.e. National Eligibility cum Entrance Test was conducted for the first time on 5 May 2013. This examination was started with the approval of Medical Council of India (MCI) and Dental Council of India (DCI). Its objective was clear that admission to MBBS, BDS and other medical courses in government and private medical colleges across the country should be given on the basis of a single examination.
Why was there a need?
Earlier, there was an examination called ‘AIPMT’ for admission in medical. Apart from this, many state and private colleges also conducted their own separate examinations. Due to this, there was pressure on students for many examinations. On top of that, many questions were raised regarding management quota and heavy fees in private colleges. Bright students were left behind and those who had money got more opportunities.
In view of these problems, it was decided to bring a uniform examination. NEET was implemented after the consent of the Supreme Court and the initiative of the Central Government. Although initially some states opposed it, but later this examination was implemented in the entire country.
Who used to conduct the examination in the beginning?
When NEET was held for the first time in 2013, it was conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Later, from the year 2019, its responsibility was given to the National Testing Agency (NTA). Even today NTA conducts this examination.
In which courses admission is available?
Apart from MBBS and BDS, one can also get admission in courses like AYUSH, Veterinary (BVSc) through NEET. Not only this, admission in big institutes like AIIMS and JIPMER is now done on the basis of NEET only. Passing NEET has also been made mandatory for Indian students wishing to do MBBS abroad.
Who can take the exam?
Not only students of India can give this exam, but NRI, OCI, PIO and foreign citizens can also apply. The minimum age has been fixed at 17 years. The maximum age is 25 years, on the other hand, reserved category gets a relaxation of 5 years.

How is the exam pattern?
In NEET, questions are asked from Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology. There are total 200 questions, out of which 180 questions have to be solved.
