Why Beer Can Increase Kidney Stone Risk: Many types of claims are made on social media regarding kidney stones. One of these claims is that drinking beer helps in removing stones quickly. Many people accept this as true after hearing the experiences of friends or relatives. But experts say that this is just a myth and believing in it can prove harmful.

There may be loss instead of profit

Dr. Atul D. Sajgure, consultant nephrologist at Sahyadri Super Specialty Hospital, Pune, clearly says that beer does not reduce the risk of kidney stones. According to him, alcohol can increase dehydration in the body, which increases the risk of stone formation in the long run. Mumbai’s P.D. Dr Jatin Kothari, consultant nephrologist at Hinduja Hospital and Medical Research Centre, told TOI that people think that beer is a liquid, so it will keep the body hydrated. But in reality the effect of alcohol is completely opposite. Alcohol acts as a diuretic in the body, that is, it removes excess water from the body through frequent urination. In such a situation, if a person is not drinking enough water and is relying only on beer, then there may be a lack of water in the body.

The risk of weight gain and metabolic syndrome increases

According to Dr. Kothari, due to dehydration the minerals present in urine become more concentrated, which increases the chances of stone formation. That is, the thing that people consider to be a cure can sometimes increase the problem further. Experts also say that beer not only increases dehydration but can also increase the level of uric acid in the body. High uric acid is considered to be a major reason for the formation of uric acid stones. Apart from this, drinking excessive amounts of beer can also increase the risk of weight gain and metabolic syndrome, which can further make the problem of kidney stones more serious.

Dr. Kothari says that many people start drinking beer instead of water because they think that it will flush the kidneys. But lack of water and the effect of alcohol together can make the situation worse.

What is the easiest way?

According to experts, the easiest and most effective way to prevent kidney stones is to drink adequate amount of water. Dr. Sajagure advises that one should drink 8 to 12 glasses of water throughout the day, so that urine remains dilute and minerals do not accumulate. According to Dr. Kothari, lemon water can also be beneficial, because the citrate present in it helps in stopping the process of stone formation.

Doctors say that kidney stones are not formed for just one reason. Eating habits, drinking less water, excess salt, metabolic problems and genetic reasons can also be responsible for this. Therefore, it is more important to take correct medical advice instead of trusting the myths spread on social media.
