There is currently a big legal dispute in discussion in Bollywood, in which famous filmmaker Vashu Bhagnani and Tips Music have come face to face. The matter is related to Varun Dhawan’s upcoming film Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. During the shooting of the film, some videos went viral on the internet, in which a new version of the song ‘Chunari Chunari’ was heard. This song was the superhit song of Salman Khan and Karisma Kapoor starrer Biwi No.1, which was produced by Vashu Bhagnani’s Pooja Entertainment.
The controversy started when Vashu Bhagnani alleged that the song was being used without his permission. However, the matter is not limited to just one song, rather its roots go back to the era of the 90s and 2000s, when filmmakers used to sell the music rights of their films to big companies. At that time, earnings were from cassette and CD sales, hence there was not much clarity regarding digital rights.
According to reports, the music rights of Biwi No.1 had already been sold to Tips Music and now the company is earning continuously from the same songs. Vashu Bhagnani says that he had given only music rights, whereas some digital and video rights should still be with him. There is a legal battle going on between the two parties since 2018 regarding this issue.
The name of Dhawan family has also been added to this controversy. Actually, in 2020, David Dhawan made Coolie No.1 remake with Varun Dhawan, which was produced by Pooja Entertainment. After this, there was discussion between both the families to work together in future also. There were reports that Rohit Dhawan and Jackky Bhagnani were working on Biwi No.1 remake, but later the Dhawan family parted ways with the project. After some time, David Dhawan signed a new film with Tips Films and then leaked videos of ‘Chunari Chunari’ surfaced.
It is being told that Vashu Bhagnani had directly talked to Varun Dhawan about this. Varun assured them that he is not making a remake of Biwi No.1, but this song has been used in the film on the advice of Tips Films. Now the matter has reached Katihar court of Bihar. For the time being, the Court has instructed both the parties to maintain the old situation until the final decision is reached.
At present, this case has become one of the most talked about legal disputes of Bollywood. Now it will be interesting to see what the court decides on this music rights controversy.
