PLI 2.0 Mobiles: Now our Made in India mobile phones will be made in India. For this, the Government of India is preparing to bring a new version of PLI (Production Linked Incentive) scheme for manufacturing mobile phones i.e. PLI 2.0. Its objective is to make more and more parts of mobile phones in India, so that dependence on foreign countries can be reduced. In the new scheme, the government wants that at least 55% of the parts used in mobile phones should be made in India. Currently this figure is only around 18-20%.
Government’s new plan
If reports are to be believed, the government wants to implement this new scheme by linking it with the Rs 40,000 crore Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS). This will promote local manufacturing of essential parts like displays, camera modules, chipsets and Li-ion batteries.

Finance Ministry expressed concern
The Finance Ministry has expressed concern that although India has progressed in manufacturing and exporting smartphones, many expensive electronic parts still have to be imported from abroad. Therefore, in the new scheme, there will be more focus not only on higher sales but also on local sourcing and manufacturing of parts in India. The government can give extra benefits to those companies which will make or buy essential mobile parts in India.
Under the old PLI scheme started in the year 2020, till now 32 companies have crossed the target of investment, production and export. Under this scheme till now:
- An investment of Rs 17,519 crore was made.
- Rs 11.01 lakh crore was produced.
- Exports worth Rs 6.27 lakh crore were made.
The government hopes that many of the 75 factories approved under ECMS will start production this year, which will further accelerate the pace of manufacturing mobile parts in India.
