Prime Minister Narendra Modi inspected Zorawar Tank at L&T plant in Hazira (Surat). This is the newest tank for the Indian Army, which will be available next year. In the year 2019, PM Modi had taken a ride in the K-9 cannon made with the help of South Korea in this same plant.
Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) in collaboration with private company L&T has developed light tank ‘Zoravar’. Its proto-version was revealed to the world in 2024. In such a situation, trials of Zorawar are currently going on. According to DRDO, by next year i.e. by 2027, the Indian Army will get this tank for deployment in Eastern Ladakh. In such a situation, its production is going on at a fast pace in Hazira near Surat.
According to DRDO, Zorawar tank is only 25 tonnes, which is only half of India’s existing tank. Along with anti-aircraft gun, Zorawar tank will also be equipped with drone technology including artificial intelligence technology. This will be an ‘amphibious’ platform which will be able to cross rivers and streams easily.
The Indian Army has named the light tank after the 19th century Dogra military general Zorawar Singh who defeated the Chinese army in Tibet.
According to DRDO, now summer and winter trials of Zorawar tank are going on. Also, tests are being conducted in high altitude areas like desert and Ladakh. After this, the Defense Ministry and the Army will start the process of acquisition. Initially, the Indian Army has prepared a plan to order 59 light tanks. However, the army will need a total of 354 light tanks.
