South Korean President Lee Jae-myung believes that the increasing military conflict between the US and Iran has further weakened North Korea’s chances of abandoning its nuclear weapons program. According to him, the current global security situation is further motivating North Korea to retain its nuclear weapons.
In an interview with British magazine ‘The Economist’, President Lee said, ‘US President Donald Trump’s ‘distinctive personality’ could prove helpful in bringing North Korea back to the negotiating table.’ He expressed hope that through dialogue, efforts to reduce tension in the Korean Peninsula can move forward. However, Lee also clarified that South Korea itself is not in favor of acquiring nuclear weapons. He said that it is neither desirable nor practical for South Korea to develop nuclear weapons. He reiterated his government’s commitment to nuclear non-proliferation.
On defense policy, President Lee said, ‘South Korea will have to take its own responsibilities in matters of national security and continuously strengthen its defense capabilities.’ Also talked about the internal politics of the country. Lee also mentioned the political turmoil resulting from former President Yun Suk Yeol’s imposition of martial law in 2024. He said, ‘South Korea can now move beyond the tendency to consider abnormal circumstances as normal and can join the countries leading the world in the future.’
On economic issues, President Lee supported schemes like Universal Basic Income. He said that due to the artificial intelligence (AI) based technological boom, some part of the additional profit earned by chip companies like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix should also reach the general public.

He also admitted that after leaving the presidency, the possibility of his impeachment or going to jail cannot be completely ruled out on the basis of legal cases pending against him. However, at present, the hearing of all the cases against him while he is holding the office of President is postponed.
Tension is continuously increasing in West Asia. The US Army started military action against Iran after an American Apache helicopter was shot down near the Strait of Hormuz, in response to which Iran also attacked about 22 American bases in the Gulf countries. The development has raised fears of a major military conflict in the region, even as US President Donald Trump has talked about the possibility of an agreement to end the war.
