A senior Trump administration official said Friday that Iran has promised never to make or acquire nuclear weapons under a proposed deal, while the easing of sanctions would be contingent on stricter investigations and inspections. He further said that this agreement has the support of regional allies including Israel and Gulf countries.
He said that we are confident that all our allies Israel and the Gulf alliance will also join it. Of course, this does not mean that they will give up their right to self-defense, and if the Iranians do not fulfill their responsibility, I do not think that the Israelis will not respond. The official also said that there is consensus within Iran on the proposed agreement.
The official said, “We see a consensus among the IRGC, the fundamentalists and the civilian leadership that this is a good and acceptable deal. So we are confident that there is consensus within the system. That doesn’t mean there isn’t some disagreement, but we think the disagreement is very minimal.”
‘Unless America benefits, neither does Iran’
According to the official, the agreement has been designed in such a way that Iran gets benefits only after fulfilling its promises. He further said that I am confident that we have prepared this deal in such a way that unless we get the benefit, they too will not get the benefit. In this way, we will move forward on the path of agreement through dialogue.
Iran will stay away from nuclear weapons
On the specifics of the agreement, the official said Iran has promised to destroy nuclear material and close nuclear sites, although technical details are still being negotiated. The official said Tehran has pledged not to develop or acquire nuclear weapons indefinitely and benefits under the deal will be available only if verification conditions are met. The official further said that a period of 60 days of technical talks has been fixed and this has been clearly included in the MOU.
