University Grants Commission (UGC) has alerted students, parents and general public about fake universities and educational institutions. The Commission has clarified that only the universities or institutes, which are established under a State Act, Central Act or Provincial Act, or those who have the right to grant degrees under the UGC Act, 1956, only they can issue degrees legally.
Concern over the increasing number of fake institutions
Are. The Commission said in its warning, "The degrees given by such institutions will neither be recognized nor will they be considered valid for higher education or government jobs."
To protect students from cheating, UGC has advised all stakeholders to check the list of recognized universities and fake institutions on the official website of UGC before taking admission. If any institution gets information about illegally running educational programs, then they can email its complaint on ugcampc@gmail.com. Appropriate action can be taken on the institutions related to this.
Government action against fake universities
In February, Union Minister of State for Education Dr. Sukant Majumdar informed in the Lok Sabha that 21 institutions across the country have been identified as fake universities. When the government was asked about these universities to officially declare ‘fake’ and action against them, the minister clarified that it is the responsibility of the state governments to maintain law and order.
Therefore, the Central Government has requested the Chief Secretaries of all states and union territories to take legal action to close these institutions and take strict steps against those who mislead the students. Since 2014, 12 fake universities have been closed so far.
