Watch: Rohit Sharma was honored with Padma Shri on the same day he made his debut, President gave the award

President of India Draupadi Murmu has honored former Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma with the Padma Shri award. Rohit Sharma received the country’s fourth highest civilian honor at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on Tuesday, June 23. Rohit was supposed to receive this honor in May this year, but due to cricket related reasons the former Indian captain could not reach Rashtrapati Bhavan.

This is also a special day for Rohit Sharma because on 23 June 2007, he played his first international match in the ODI match against Ireland. 19 years later, on the same date, President Draupadi Murmu honored him with Padma Shri.

Many famous personalities including Prime Minister Narendra Modi were present in the felicitation ceremony. Rohit Sharma came wearing a black suit and folded hands in front of the President before receiving the award. Rohit Sharma is not the only cricketer who has been honored with Padma Shri in 2026. Earlier in May, Indian women’s cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur had received the honor of Padma Shri. Under the captaincy of Harmanpreet, Team India won the 2025 ODI World Cup title.

50 centuries, 20173 runs and 653 sixes

Rohit Sharma has achieved many achievements in his historic career. Wearing the jersey of Team India, he has played 510 matches so far in international cricket. In this 19 year long journey, he has scored 20173 runs and has scored 50 centuries in all three formats together. He has hit 653 sixes in international cricket, which is the highest in the world.

Rohit Sharma is the only cricketer in the world to score double century thrice in the history of ODI cricket. Has retired from T20 and Test cricket, but is still active in ODI cricket.
