The new cycle of T20 International is starting with the tour of Ireland, after this India will play a 5-match T20 series on the tour of England. After Suryakumar Yadav, BCCI appointed Shreyas Iyer as the new captain, while ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill was not included in the team for this shorter format. He is not even in the Asian Games squad, so is he not part of the T20 plans? According to the report this is not so.

Rev Sport, quoting sources, said in its report that the selection committee had also considered bringing back Shubman Gill in the T20 setup and handing over the captaincy to him. The source said that there were two options for captaincy in the form of Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill, the names of both were discussed. According to the report, the selectors took the final decision that Shreyas Iyer should be given the captaincy till the Asian Games to be held in September-October.

Of course, this thing has come out in the report, but Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar had said during the team announcement that keeping in mind the Olympics and the next T20 World Cup, Shreyas Iyer is better for captaincy.

A second-string team may be sent for the Zimbabwe tour in July, in which the captain may also be different. If we look at IPL performance, Shreyas Iyer is a better captain, which Agarkar had also said in the press conference, but according to the report, the selectors have not yet taken any final decision regarding Gill. Apart from the next T20 World Cup to be held in Australia and New Zealand, he can also participate in the LA28 Olympics.

There are expectations from Shreyas Iyer that he will take the Indian team further under his captaincy, there will be more pressure on him because India’s T20 record under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav was excellent and the team has won the T20 World Cup twice in a row.
