Madrasa Education in India: There has been debate from time to time regarding Madrassas in India. It is said that many people associated with madrassas have made important contributions in the field of country’s history, freedom movement, social reform and education. Names of many personalities are also taken among those who got education in Madrasas, from Sheikh Ul Hind to Fazle Haq Khairabadi and APJ Abdul Kalam. Apart from this, there were many scholars and educationists who did great work for the country and society. In such a situation, let us know about those personalities whose names have been associated with the education and tradition of madrassas.

1. Allama Fazle Haq Khairabadi – Allama Fazle Haq Khairabadi is counted among the prominent leaders of the first war of independence in 1857. He received education in Islamic theology and philosophy from madrassas. Khairabadi was not only a religious scholar but also held the post of Chief Justice of Delhi. He had issued a fatwa of Jihad against the British rule. For this reason, he was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment and sent to the black waters of Andaman. His contribution to the Indian independence movement is still considered important.

2. Sheikh ul Hind Maulana – Maulana Mahmood-ul-Hassan was among the first students of Darul Uloom located in Deoband. He taught at Darul Uloom Deoband for about 44 years and taught thousands of students. During the British rule he led a movement for the independence of India. Due to his activities against the British, he was arrested and imprisoned in Malta, where he spent about three years. Maulana Mahmood-ul-Hassan was later honored with the title of Sheikh-ul-Hind. After being released from jail, he laid special emphasis on spreading the teachings of Quran and mutual unity in the Muslim society. He believed that the two main reasons for the backwardness of Muslims were distance from the Quran and mutual differences.

3. Raja Ram Mohan Roy – The name of Raja Ram Mohan Roy, one of the prominent faces of the Indian social reform movement, is also taken among those who received education in madrassas. Raja Ram Mohan Roy raised his voice against many evils prevalent in Indian society and promoted modern ideology, his contribution in the field of education and social awareness is still remembered.

4. Munshi Premchand – The name of Munshi Premchand, who is counted among the most distinguished writers of Hindi and Urdu literature, is also included among the personalities who received education in madrassas. Premchand presented the real picture of the society through his literature, he gave prominent place to the lives of farmers, laborers and common people in his stories and novels. His works are still considered a heritage of Indian literature.

5. Dr. Rajendra Prasad – The first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad is also counted among those prominent personalities whose name has been associated with Madrasa education. He played an important role in the creation of independent India. From the process of constitution making to the post of President, he worked to give a new direction to the country.

6. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam – The life of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, former President of India and famous as Missile Man, is considered one of the most inspirational stories of modern India. Born on 15 October 1931 in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu, Dr. Kalam studied Aeronautical Engineering. He played an essential role in the development of India’s first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-III). After this he led many important projects in ISRO and Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO). He contributed to many national projects, from the development of Agni and Prithvi missiles to the Pokhran-II nuclear test.
