PM Modi hands over Made in India Patrol Vessel to Seychelles, India emerges as maritime security partner

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday handed over the Indian-made ‘Fast Patrol Vessel’ (FPV) PS LESPWAR to Seychelles. Along with this, he reiterated India’s resolve to strengthen the country’s maritime security in the Indian Ocean region and deepen mutual defense cooperation.

The vessel was handed over to Seychelles President Patrick Herminy at a ceremony held at the Seychelles Coast Guard Base in Victoria on the first day of PM Modi’s official visit to Seychelles. This special patrol vessel built by Goa Shipyard Limited will significantly increase Seychelles’ maritime surveillance and patrolling capability in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

“The handing over of Fast Patrol Vessel Lespwar to the Seychelles Coast Guard is an important milestone in the growing partnership between India and Seychelles in the field of defense and maritime security,” PM Modi said in a post on Twitter. “Let us be confident of standing shoulder to shoulder with Seychelles, a partner we can rely on, and work together to deepen our enduring friendship and strengthen our collective maritime potential,” he said.

What did India give to Seychelles?

Apart from the petrol vessel, PM Modi also handed over 6 ambulances, 10 utility vehicles and 5 laser radial boats to Seychelles. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), this help will further contribute to the development, disaster management and maritime security of this island country. The Ministry of External Affairs said that under a special initiative, PM Modi handed over the ‘Made in India’ Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) PS LESPWAR to President Dr. Patrick Hermini. This FPV will contribute to strengthening Seychelles’ maritime surveillance and EEZ patrolling capabilities.

The Ministry of External Affairs further said that inspired by India’s Vision Ocean, India and Seychelles are further enhancing their strong defense partnership, thereby promoting security and stability in the Indian Ocean region. The handing over of this vessel to the Seychelles Coast Guard reflects the growing defense ties between the two countries and highlights India’s role as a trusted maritime security partner in the region.
