Former President Pranab Mukherjee’s daughter and writer Sharmistha Mukherjee on Saturday made several important revelations related to her father’s diary and his personal relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He told that Pranab Mukherjee had written in his diary that after former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Narendra Modi is the Prime Minister who can read the pulse of the public in the best way. Along with this, he also talked in detail about Modi’s understanding of foreign policy, his father’s views on visiting RSS headquarters in Nagpur, his advice to Congress and the importance of dialogue in democracy.

Sharmistha Mukherjee told that her father had written in his diary that after Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the only Prime Minister who understands the feelings and needs of the people the best. He said that this comment was written at a time when there was severe flood in Jammu and Kashmir.
He told that during that time Prime Minister Modi first reached Siachen and then celebrated Diwali among the flood affected people of Jammu and Kashmir. Pranab Mukherjee was very impressed by this step. Apart from this, he also appreciated Modi’s ability to understand the nuances of foreign policy very quickly and implement them effectively.

What did Pranab Mukherjee say when he visited RSS headquarters?
Sharmistha Mukherjee also mentioned about Pranab Mukherjee’s visit to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) headquarters in Nagpur in the year 2018. He said that his father believed that the biggest strength of democracy is dialogue.
She told that at that time she was in active politics of Congress and was very angry with this decision of her father. When he told his father that by going to the RSS headquarters he was giving legitimacy to the organization, Pranab Mukherjee got angry.
According to Sharmistha, Pranab Mukherjee had said, ‘Who am I to give legitimacy to RSS? RSS has been given legitimacy by the people of the country, who have elected one of their preachers as the Prime Minister with an overwhelming majority. If Congress ignores this truth then it will be harmful for itself.
Big revelation on the relationship between Prime Minister Modi and Pranab Mukherjee
Sharmistha Mukherjee told that there was a very good relationship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and her father and this relationship was not only after becoming the President and the Prime Minister. He said that Narendra Modi himself had told him that before becoming the Chief Minister of Gujarat, when he used to come to Delhi as an ordinary RSS worker, he would often meet Pranab Mukherjee during his morning walk. According to Sharmistha, Prime Minister Modi had told her, ‘I always used to touch Dada’s feet. I don’t know why, but I always had deep respect for him.

Sharmistha said that today the kind of dialogue that should take place between the government and the opposition is lacking and this is not a good situation for a healthy democracy. Sharmistha Mukherjee said that even when Congress was in opposition during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led government, Pranab Mukherjee had advised Sonia Gandhi that Parliament should not be disrupted. He said that Pranab Mukherjee believed that debate and discussion should continue continuously in Parliament. In the interest of the country and the people, it is the responsibility of both the government and the opposition to find a middle path instead of confrontation and strengthen democratic dialogue.
