When India showed its eyes on Indus water, there was outcry in PAK, Shahbaz government came to its knees, made this appeal to New Delhi

Pakistan is whining after India’s tough stance regarding the Indus Water Treaty (IWT). Indus Water Commissioner in the Shahbaz government, Syed Mohammad Mehar Ali Shah said on Tuesday (30 June 2026) that the issue of Indus Water Treaty is a matter of national security for Pakistan. He said that since April last year, we have written letters to India four times regarding the fluctuations in the flow of Chenab river, but till now no reply has come from there.

‘India’s silence is a threat to Pakistan’

Addressing a seminar in Islamabad, he mentioned the water sharing agreement since 1960. Mehar Ali said that the change in the flow of water of Chenab River is a strategic threat for Pakistan. He said, ‘The reason behind why this is happening and the data related to the projects should be given to India. India is not giving any answer on this matter and its silence is a threat to us.

He said, ‘No responsible country or official present in the downstream part of the river can ignore this fluctuation of water as a normal thing, because it is related to the safety of the people living downstream. Indus Water Commission has been formed to investigate these incidents. Despite India’s suspension of this water treaty, Pakistan tried to keep the data sharing channel active under the International World Trade Organization (IWT) last year.

Pakistan made these demands from India

According to Dawn’s report, Mehar Ali Shah alleges that Pakistan is fully following the rules of the Indus Water Treaty, but no response or cooperation is being received from India. He said, ‘Since August 2023, neither any visit has taken place nor the data of the month has been submitted. There is a danger of increasing tension between the two countries. Mehar Ali made three demands from India regarding the Indus Water Treaty. First- A meeting of the commissions of India and Pakistan should be called immediately. Second- Start sharing water data again. Third- Visits and inspections by officials of both the countries should begin again.

Pakistan scared about water control

Pakistan has alleged that India is reopening its downstream channels through the Marala Barrage, allowing it to empty and refill the dam as per its wish. Pakistani official said that with this, India will have complete control over the flow of water, which is a big threat for us. Apart from this, Pakistan has expressed concern over the Chenab-Beas link project. Through this project, India can divert about 19 lakh acre feet of water from Chenab River.
