‘Iran should remove the thought of toll from Hormuz, think big…’, America explained to Tehran in the talks in Doha.

America and Iran completed a round of talks in Doha, Qatar, in which the main issue was the Strait of Hormuz. According to the Axios report, however, no information has been given by either side as to whether any progress has been made towards permanent peace. Apart from this, the terms of the MoU signed between the two countries last month were also discussed.

Axios, quoting sources, said that the main issues discussed included the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s frozen assets and the ceasefire in Lebanon. Regarding Hormuz, US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner tried to convince the Iranian side that their demand for toll in Hormuz could derail the entire US-Iran deal, which could cause greater damage to Tehran.

According to the report of Axios, an American official said that America has given a message to Iran to think big. The official further said that after the US lifts the embargo on Iranian products, the money Iran will earn from openly selling oil and other resources will be 100 times more profitable for them than adopting gangster-like methods to collect toll.

Situation worsened due to introduction of new shipping route
In view of the recent firing between America and Iran, the situation around Hormuz was an important issue in the talks held in Doha. The opening of a new shipping route in Hormuz, off the coast of Oman, worsened the situation and last week Iran attacked several commercial vessels.

When will the 60 day period of MoU be completed?
In the last few months, Tehran, along with Oman, has made several attempts to gain control over this strait. Iran has said that after the 60-day period of the MoU ends, both countries will manage the Strait of Hormuz and demand fees from ships passing through there. This 60-day period began immediately after the signing of the MoU last month and is aimed at reaching a final agreement to end the dispute between the US and Iran. The deadline for this is 18th August.

Differences regarding MoU also
According to the report of Axios, there have been differences between the two countries regarding the MoU. America says that any new arrangement in the strait should also get the approval of the Gulf countries. At the same time, Tehran says that Hormuz falls in their territory, hence Gulf countries can express their opinion, but only Iran will take the final decision.
