Adani News: ‘This is not America’s business’, US Justice Department justified the decision to close the case against Adani

US DoJ on Adani Case: The US Justice Department has given a big statement in the ongoing criminal case against billionaire industrialist Gautam Adani and seven others. The Department of Justice i.e. DOJ has defended the decision to close this case completely. The department told the federal judge that the case was legally weak and diplomatically damaging. This should have ended already.

Actually, this whole matter is of the year 2024, when there was Biden administration in America. At that time, the US Justice Department had accused Gautam Adani and others of planning to pay bribes of about Rs 2100 crore to Indian officials to get solar energy contracts in India. Also, billions of dollars of investment were raised by lying to American investors. Now the Justice Department has filed a strong 10-page reply in the court to completely dismiss this case.

The decision to close the case is absolutely right – Justice Department

This answer came when US District Judge Nicholas Garaufis asked the Justice Department why it wanted to close this case forever? In response, Justice Department official R. Trent McCotter bluntly told the court that courts should not investigate government decisions in this manner. Doing so violates the internal veto and privileges of the department. He clearly said that the decision to withdraw this case was not a difficult decision, but it is a completely right step.

Justice Department gave reason for closing the case

  • The department clearly wrote that this is completely a foreign matter. In this, some Indian people were taking contracts to deliver Indian electricity to the people of India by paying the Indian government through the tax rebate program.
  • America’s involvement in this spoils diplomatic relations and is a waste of the country’s resources. India is more capable of handling its internal affairs than lawyers in Washington or Brooklyn.
  • Indian investigative agencies already investigated it and did not find any irregularities.
  • American investors have not suffered a loss of even a single rupee. The money from all the bonds has either been paid or is being paid on time.
  • The main evidence and witnesses related to this case are outside America.
  • The allegations of fraud that were made were just common things in the corporate world, which such big investors do not blindly trust.

This is a weak case – Justice Department

The Justice Department also clarified that under the new US policy that came in June 2025, the focus will now be on US security, harm to American companies or serious international crimes and Adani’s case does not fall within this scope. Apart from this, the department also termed as completely false the reports running in the American media, in which it was being said that this case was being closed in exchange for the promise of investment by Adani Group in America. The officer said that even if there was no issue of investment, he would still have demanded closure of this weak case.
