Iran has expressed gratitude to the Government of India and the Indian delegation for attending the state funeral of its late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. The Iranian Embassy in India has described it as a strong symbol of mutual respect, old friendship and deep cultural ties between the two countries. On Friday, a high level delegation from India reached Tehran. This included Bihar Governor Lieutenant General (retd) Syed Ata Hasnain and Minister of State for External Affairs Pavitra Margherita. Both the leaders paid tribute to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. According to Iran, Khamenei died during the US and Israeli attacks in Tehran in February this year.
Apart from the Indian delegation, several religious leaders from India’s Sikh, Hindu, Muslim and Christian communities, including Congress leader Salman Khurshid, former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti, also attended the funeral and paid homage. The Iranian Embassy issued a detailed post on social media platform X thanking the Government of India, the Indian public and all the Indian representatives attending the funeral. The embassy said that Iran will always remember the respect and solidarity that India has shown in this hour of national mourning.

According to Iran’s state Press TV, the funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei started in Tehran on Monday (July 6, 2026) morning. Officials estimate that the last journey will last for 10 to 12 hours and lakhs of people are expected to participate in it. It is being considered one of the largest public gatherings in the modern history of Iran. Khamenei’s coffin was wrapped in the national flag and placed on a special cart. The vehicle was decorated in traditional style. A large number of people were present on the streets during the last journey. Many people were seen trying to touch the coffin, while some extended their scarves and other objects towards the vehicle so that they could touch the coffin. In Iran it is considered a symbol of blessings.
Where will Khamenei’s body be buried?
In view of the scorching heat, the employees engaged in the arrangements sprinkled water on the crowd. Security officials continuously appealed to the people to maintain peace, avoid scuffles and stay on the roadside. Revolutionary Guard General Hassan Hassanzadeh said the funeral procession would travel through the streets of Tehran to Mehrabad International Airport. After this, Khamenei’s body will be taken to his birthplace Mashhad, where he will be buried in the shrine of Imam Reza. The Iranian government has banned many public activities during the national mourning. Special arrangements have been made on roads and airfields. The government says that this event is a symbol of the unity of the country and respect for its late leader.
