After giving a tough message on expansionism, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has targeted Indonesia without naming China. PM Modi said that India and Indonesia are close both in heart and geography. He said that the relationship between the two countries is one of ocean. PM Modi’s mention of the sea in his speech is a direct message to the dragon that just as Iran used the Strait of Hormuz, India will now strengthen its hold on the Malacca Strait.
Amid growing concerns in South-East Asia over China’s expansionist attitude in the Indo Pacific region, PM Modi said in the Indonesian Parliament on Tuesday (7 July 2026) that India follows the path of development, not expansionism. After this, PM Modi addressed the Indian communities in Jakarta, where Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and senior ministers were present. Here he said that geographically India and Indonesia are very close.
China’s siege of Malacca Strait
During PM Modi’s visit, India and Indonesia have agreed to jointly develop Sabang Port located on the northern tip of Sumatra island. This port is at the entry gate of Malacca Strait. It is located only 160 kilometers away from India’s proposed Great Nicobar Trans-shipment Port. It is also being called Hormuz of India and Indonesia. China’s entire economy depends on the Malacca Strait. If this sea route is closed, China’s shining economy will be badly affected.
About 80 percent of China’s total crude oil imports pass through here. Most of its trading ships also pass through here. If seen strategically, this path can prove to be a game changer for India. China often fears that if a war-like situation arises, Beijing could be deeply hurt by closing this route.
India did reforms one after another: PM Modi
PM Modi said, ‘Be it Indonesia or India, both our countries are impatient for development. We have no chance to stop or pause. Today India’s economy is playing a big role in driving the growth and development of the world. Even when such a big crisis of Corona hit the world, India’s economy did not come to a standstill. Even when such a big crisis was going on in West Asia, India’s economy did not stop. This pace has not come just like that. India has done reforms one after another, we have performed continuously, that is why today the country is being transformed.
