Afghanistan has taken a dig at US President Donald Trump over his statement about taking control of Bagram airbase. Muhajir Farahi, Minister of Information and Culture in the Taliban government, said that Bagram Air Base is far away from America’s reach. He condemned the attack on Afghanistan by Pakistan. He warned Pakistan that Afghanistan will protect its sovereignty against any external attack.
Taliban attacked Pakistan
Regarding the ongoing tension between Pakistan and Afghanistan, he said, ‘A befitting reply will be given to the military government of Islamabad. We will protect our sovereignty at any cost. The Taliban government said 38 civilians were killed and 163 people, including women and children, were injured in Pakistani attacks. India termed these attacks as open aggression and a direct threat to regional peace.
On relations with India, he said that Afghanistan’s foreign policy will be based only on the interests of its own country and not on the likes and dislikes of any other country. He said, ‘We have old and historic relations with India. No one can teach us who we should be friends with and who we should not. We want the interaction between the common people of the two countries to increase and trade to strengthen, because India is our neighbour.
He said, ‘Our border posts with Pakistan have been closed repeatedly, so we have developed new trade corridors through Central Asia, Iran, India and China. We are strengthening these routes and will no longer depend on Pakistan.
Taliban angry at Trump over Bagram airbase
In an interview given to India Today, Muhajir Farahi said that Trump will get Bagram Airbase only in dreams. This airbase is located north of Kabul, which was built by the Soviet Union. After the September 11, 2001 attacks, Bagram Air Base served as the main base for US forces in Afghanistan. After the withdrawal of the US Army, this base came under the control of Taliban in August 2021. Trump has said many times that this airbase is located near China and hence America should have kept the Bagram airbase with itself.
