India-UK Trade Deal: The long awaited trade agreement between India and Britain has now been implemented. After this agreement, trade between the two countries is expected to gain new momentum. Its impact will not be limited only to luxury cars, Scotch whiskey or fashion products, but it will also have a big impact on the healthcare sector.

Especially the prices of medical devices and some special medicines coming to India from Britain may come down in the coming time. Let us know which medicines and medical products India imports from UK and how much their prices will reduce after the new trade deal.

What is the India-UK trade deal?

The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between India and Britain has come into force from 15 July 2026. This agreement was reached in its final form after negotiations that lasted for about three and a half years and 14 rounds of discussions. The objective of this deal is to increase trade between the two countries, make import-export easier and reduce or eliminate import duties on many products. Under this agreement, about 99 percent of India’s products will get duty-free access in Britain. At the same time, import duty in India on many products coming from Britain will be reduced.

Which medicines and medical products are imported into the UK?

India mainly imports specialized generic medicines and various types of medical devices from Britain. These include surgical devices, diagnostic machines, ECG machines, X-ray machines and other advanced healthcare devices. Due to the reduction in import duty on these products after the new trade deal, they are likely to become cheaper in the Indian market.

Will their prices decrease?

Under the new trade deal, custom duty on medical devices coming from Britain will be reduced in a phased manner. Whereas earlier the import duty on these products was generally 7.5 percent to 15 percent, now it will be reduced to about 3 percent. This includes imaging systems, diagnostic devices, surgical instruments and other medical technology products. Organizations associated with the industry believe that with this, modern medical devices in India will become more affordable than before. Due to reduced import duty, the prices of healthcare devices and some special medicines coming from Britain are expected to come down. Apart from this, in the next 10 years, about 85 percent of such products will become completely tariff-free. With this, modern medical devices can be available to hospitals, diagnostic centers and patients at lower prices than before.
