Alzheimer And Dementia Prevention Study 2026: Many people take the help of Omega-3 supplements to sharpen their brain and prevent diseases like Alzheimer’s or dementia. But a recent clinical study has raised questions on this notion. According to research, taking Omega-3 supplements alone did not provide any significant benefit in memory, thinking ability or damage to brain cells.
Is it beneficial for health?
Researchers say that Omega-3 supplements cannot be considered an easy solution to improve brain health. During the study, the level of Omega-3 in the brain of people who were given Omega-3 supplements increased, but there was no significant improvement in their mental ability. That means just taking supplements is not enough.
What things are important to pay attention to?
According to Dr. Hussain Yasin, the lead writer of the study, he believes that if the brain is to be kept healthy for a long time, then it is important to pay attention to the entire lifestyle instead of relying on just one supplement. Regular exercise, reducing stress, getting enough sleep, and adopting a balanced plant-based diet are considered more effective for brain health. Along with this, Omega-3 obtained from natural sources like fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, sardine, walnuts, chia seeds and flaxseed can be more beneficial.

When does its effect occur?
The researcher also gave the example of Mediterranean diet. He says that the people living there do not depend only on supplements, but get Omega-3 naturally from fish, nuts and seeds. Along with this, do regular physical activity, keep stress low and adopt a balanced lifestyle. This is the reason why better effect of Omega-3 is seen there.
On which people was the study done?
This study was conducted on 365 people aged 55 to 80 years, who had one or more risk factors that increase the risk of dementia. One group was given high doses of omega-3 supplements daily for two years, while the other group was given a placebo. After MRI scans, blood tests and tests related to mental ability, it was found that despite the increase in Omega-3 levels in the body and brain of those taking the supplement, there was no significant difference in their memory or thinking ability.

Is it really not beneficial?
However, the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3 also clarifies that this does not mean that Omega-3 is not necessary for the body. It is an important nutrient for the normal functioning of heart, cells and brain. But if the diet is unbalanced, there is no physical activity and the lifestyle is unhealthy, then it would not be right to expect Omega-3 supplements alone to make the brain sharper or reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s.
