India said on Friday (July 17) that it is closely monitoring America’s proposed law. Under this law, up to 100 percent tariff can be imposed on countries purchasing crude oil from Russia, including India and China. It is being told that this bill is getting the support of about 60 senators of America. India also said that it is in touch with American officials to reduce the problems faced by Indian citizens due to American visa policies.
“We are closely monitoring these developments and are aware of this proposed law,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at a media briefing. In response to a question about the proposed bill, he said, “As far as buying oil is concerned, we buy oil from many countries in the world. It depends on our point of view.”
The idea of bringing this law regarding oil purchase from Russia was given by Democrat Senator Richard Blumenthal and late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham. Its aim is to impose tough sanctions on Russia’s financial institutions and energy sector in order to stop the income which Russia uses to finance the war against Ukraine.
On which countries does America want to impose tariffs?
American Senator Blumenthal said on Tuesday that the purpose of the proposed law is to impose 100 percent tariff on China, India, Slovakia, Hungary and Azerbaijan, the five biggest countries that buy Russian oil. This bill will target countries that continue to buy Russian crude oil. In an attempt to increase pressure on Moscow, additional heavy fines may be imposed on these countries.
America has tightened visa rules for foreign students, people and journalists. With this, the decades-old policy under which they could stay in the country indefinitely without government monitoring has ended. This step is likely to affect a large number of Indians.
What did you say about visa rules?
Randhir Jaiswal said, “We have seen some news related to visa rules. Visa rules, visa issuance process and matters related to immigration come under the sovereign rights of any country. He said that when issues of problems faced by legitimate travelers and students, among others, are brought to our notice, we raise these issues with the American side to mitigate the problems of our people.
