The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made five major changes in the playing conditions before the 2026-27 domestic season. According to the PTI report, the biggest change in these new rules has been made regarding the bowler who deliberately bowls a front-foot no-ball or a non-landing delivery. Now, if this is done, the bowler will be suspended not just for the innings but for the entire match. BCCI has sent these changes to all the state cricket associations based on the recommendations of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).
Suspended for entire match for intentionally bowling a no-ball.
According to the new BCCI rule, if the on-field umpire finds a bowler guilty of intentionally bowling a front-foot no-ball or a non-landing delivery, then that bowler will not be able to bowl for the rest of the match. Earlier this restriction was limited to that innings only. BCCI clarified in its circular that the decision to implement this rule will be taken by the on-field umpire.
The last over of the day will be completed under any circumstances.
BCCI has also changed the rules related to the end of the game. Now even if a wicket falls during the last over of the day, the umpire will conduct a complete over. Earlier the day’s play used to end as soon as the wicket fell in the last over. MCC believes that due to the old rules, the new batting pair did not get a chance to come to the crease.
Teams will not be able to declare or forfeit the last innings
Under the new rule, now no team will be able to declare or forfeit the last innings of the match. MCC and BCCI believe that some teams were using this rule to create artificial results, which was against the spirit of the game. In domestic ODI cricket, now the head coach of the team will be allowed to go on the field and talk to the players during the drinks break. ICC is also preparing to implement a similar rule in international cricket.
Wicketkeepers got relief
BCCI has also changed the rules related to wicketkeepers. Now the wicketkeeper’s gloves should be behind the stumps only at the time of releasing the ball. It was mandatory for the wicketkeeper to place his gloves behind the stumps as soon as the bowler’s run-up started. Because of this rule, no-balls were given many times or stumpings had to be declared invalid.

New rules will be implemented from Duleep Trophy
According to PTI report, BCCI has informed all the state cricket associations about the new rules. The board will also organize awareness programs for umpires and match referees. The 2026-27 domestic season will start with the Duleep Trophy next month and all these new rules will come into effect from that tournament.
