The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed on Friday that an Indian citizen aboard a commercial ship passing through the Black Sea has died. In a statement issued late night, the Foreign Ministry said that the commercial ship MV OMORFI was attacked on July 18 while passing through the Black Sea, which was in Russian territorial waters.
The Ministry of External Affairs said in its statement, “According to the information received, an Indian citizen died in this attack. We express our deepest condolences to the family of the victim.” The ministry said that there were 10 crew members on the ship at the time of the attack, which included 3 Indian citizens.
The ministry said in its statement, “The other two Indian citizens on board the ship are said to be safe.” Condemning the attack, the ministry has described the incident as a matter of grave concern. India strongly condemns such attacks targeting commercial shipping and putting the lives of innocent civilian crew members at risk. It is a matter of grave concern that freedom of maritime navigation and international trade is facing threats.
What did the Foreign Ministry tell?
The Ministry of External Affairs said that the Indian Mission in Russia has contacted the concerned authorities and is trying to provide all possible help to the affected family. The ministry further said, “India calls on all concerned parties to adhere to international obligations to ensure the safety of maritime navigation and the unhindered flow of global trade.”
The attack follows a similar incident on July 19, when the Guinea-Bissau-flagged cargo ship MV Golden Leo was attacked shortly after leaving a Ukrainian port. In this attack, 4 Indian crew members were killed, while 1 was seriously injured.
