ODI World Cup is next year, for which all the countries have started preparations at their own level. This is the time when all the countries will be confirming their final team. Many times it happens that even a good player has to be dropped, actually it depends on the team combination. For example, if there are 4 great batsmen, but only 1 or 2 can be brought into the team, then despite doing well, someone will be disappointed. Actually, any board can select only maximum 15 players for the World Cup. Andrew McDonald, head coach of Australia’s World Cup 2023 winning team, has demanded that permission be given to select 17 players.
India and Australia, which reached the final in 2023, had to play 11 matches, but in 2027 they may have to play up to 15 matches including the final. Of these, each team will have to play at least 13 matches till the final. This time 4 teams have increased. In the last edition held in India, 10 teams played, this time the total number of teams has been increased to 14. There will be a total of 57 matches. This time there will also be a Super-7 round after the group stage, then there will be semi-finals, whereas earlier there used to be semi-finals directly after the group stage.
Speaking to SEN Radio, Australia’s Andrew McDonald said, “If this is going to be the biggest event, what will be the size of the team? In the last World Cup, we had many dilemmas in selecting 15 players. New Zealand was also in the same situation and many of their players were injured. At the beginning of the tournament, you can play only 12-13 players, so that other players can be played further. You are not able to play the team as you want. At many places, the situation is very bad. Let’s change.”

Let us tell you that Travis Head was injured in the 2023 ODI World Cup, due to which he did not play initially. Later he played and made Australia the champion by playing an important innings in the final. To avoid such problems, he has demanded that permission should be given to increase the number of players in the squad.
Giving the example of FIFA World Cup, McDonald said that the squad size there is up to 26, whereas there a team has a maximum of 8 matches. He said, “I believe that when you play matches continuously, you do not want it to be harmful. You want to play with favorite players. There should be talk on increasing the number of players in the squad.”

The coach believes that if there are more players in the squad, then you can also go with those players who are stars, but due to injury, their chances of playing are 50-50. It is difficult that ICC will decide to increase the number of players in the teams. But yes, it will be kept in mind that each team gets a break of at least 2 days between its two matches.
