Johnson & Johnson compensation: This historic settlement involving approximately 76,000 claims could put an end to a decade-long legal dispute. Johnson & Johnson has said that it will pay about $ 5.5 billion, or Rs 52,639 crore in Indian rupees, to settle thousands of lawsuits related to allegations that its baby powder and other products cause ovarian cancer. This is a historic agreement, which is likely to end the contentious legal battle that has been going on for the last decade.

The company said that this settlement covers about 76,000 claims. These include cases being heard simultaneously in federal court in New Jersey and related cases pending in various state courts. The company says the settlement represents the majority of talc-related claims remaining against it.

What was the allegation?

Johnson & Johnson was accused of containing asbestos in its talc powder, which caused serious diseases like mesothelioma and ovarian cancer. After about 20 years, lawyers paid attention to this agreement. Company Vice President Eric Haas said that these allegations are baseless, but the company is making a compromise to end the long dispute.

How much compensation will you get?

Johnson & Johnson will pay $3 billion i.e. Rs 28,680 crore in 2027 and the remaining amount in 2028. However, if more people join this agreement, the total payment can be 7 billion dollars i.e. 66,920 or more in terms of Indian rupees. Under the agreement, compensation will be paid on eligible claims related to ovarian cancer, but there is no fixed limit on the company’s total payment.

Johnson & Johnson said its talc products were safe and did not contain asbestos. The company stopped selling talc-containing baby powder in the US in 2020, but the legal dispute resumed in 2025, as its efforts to resolve matters through bankruptcy proceedings were unsuccessful.
