DU Dress Code: With the beginning of the new academic session in St. Stephen’s College of Delhi University, a big controversy has arisen regarding the dress code. The college administration has banned students from wearing shorts in many parts of the campus. After this decision, some students started protesting, calling it interference in personal freedom. Whereas many students say that this rule has been a part of the old tradition of the college and now it has been formalized.
Wearing shorts banned in many parts of campus
The notice issued by the college states that students cannot come to classrooms, tutorial rooms, laboratories, libraries, assembly halls, dining halls and chapels wearing shorts. The administration has appealed to all the students to strictly follow the campus rules. This notice is signed by the new principal of the college, Professor Susan Elias. With the beginning of the new session, this notice has been put up at different places on the campus.
Students expressed protest on the very first day
In protest against the new rule, some students reached college wearing shorts on the very first day. He says that the college cannot decide what students should wear and what not. Many students termed this decision as moral policing and said that it is an interference in their freedom of dress. Some students say that there has been an informal ban on wearing shorts in the college before, but this time for the first time it was implemented in the form of a written order.

Many senior college students and school teachers believe that wearing shorts in some formal places was not considered appropriate at St. Stephen’s for a long time. This decision may have the biggest impact on students involved in sports activities. Many players who practice in the morning reach college in sports kit, which often includes shorts. Some students claim that earlier too, students who came after sports practice wearing shorts were stopped from entering the dining hall, although no official statement was made by the college administration on this.
Other instructions also issued along with dress code
Apart from the dress code in the college, some other rules related to the campus have also been reiterated. The notice declared the entire campus a smoke-free zone and warned of disciplinary action against violators. Apart from this, students have also been instructed to carry their valid college ID card with them at all times and show it at the time of entering the dining hall.
