Bank notes of two thousand rupees remain a valid currency. On 19 May 2023, RBI announced the removal of bank note worth Rs 2,000 from circulation. The RBI said in a statement on Friday that according to the situation on April 30, 2025, notes are currently in circulation worth Rs 6,266 crore of Rs. 6,266 crore.
According to the status of nineteen May, 2023, the total value of a bank note of Rs 2,000 in the trend was Rs 3.56 lakh crore. The central bank said, “Thus, 98.24 per cent of the bank notes of Rs 2,000 in the trend till May 19, 2023 have returned.”

The facility of depositing or replacing two thousand rupees bank note was available in all bank branches of the country by October 7, 2023. The facility to replace the Rs 2,000 bank note removed from the trend is available in 19 issue offices of the Reserve Bank from May 19, 2023. From October 9, 2023, RBI’s issue office has also been accepting Rs 2,000 bank notes for people and units to deposit them in their bank accounts.
Apart from this, people can send notes of Rs 2,000 notes from Indian post to any RBI issue office within the country. This money is deposited in their bank account.
