Muhammad Yunus on Kolkata Consulate: The Bangladesh government has called back its senior diplomat Shabab bin Ahmed posted in Kolkata Consulate with immediate effect. According to the report of Dhaka’s news paper Prothom Alo, Shabab bin Ahmed issued instructions to ban the sacrifice of cow and goats in the consulate premises on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha (Bakrid). This order was issued before he took over his formal office.
Bangladesh Consulate in Kolkata has been sacrificed every year. This tradition has been going on for the last 30 years. On this, Shabab bin Ahmed said that diplomats should respect the socio-cultural sentiments of the host country. However, no one supported the decision of the Deputy High Commissioner. Mission employees described the decision of Shabab bin Ahmed as ignoring sensitivity.
Impact on Indo-Bangladesh relations?
This incident has come to light at a time when Mohammad Yunus’s interim government is in power after the fall of Sheikh Hasina government in Bangladesh. The Yunus government has been accused of supporting anti -India Islamic fundamentalists. At the same time, relations between India and Bangladesh are already stressful. This phenomenon is considered as “pouring ghee in fire”, especially at a time when religious sentiments related to cow dynasty are considered extremely sensitive in India.
Bangladesh Embassy in Netherlands
