Batting on the seaming and swinging pitches of England is not less than winning a war. In such a situation, if a batsman hit a double century on the pitch there, then it becomes a historical achievement in itself.
So far, only three batsmen have been in the history of Indian cricket who have scored a double century in Test cricket on England soil. Indian Test captain Shubman Gill has recently joined this special list, who scored a brilliant 269 runs in the second Test against England. Let us tell you about the other two veterans who have done this feat on the English pitch.
Sunil Gavaskar & nbsp;
Sunil Gavaskar, one of the biggest names of Indian cricket, became the first Indian to score a double century on England soil. In the Oval Test of 1979, he set an incredible example by scoring 221 runs in the fourth innings.
India had a target of 438 runs to win, and Gavaskar started a tremendous opening partnership of 213 runs with Chetan Chauhan. He scored 221 runs in 443 balls with 21 fours. India had reached the score of 1 wicket for 304 runs by Tea break, which raised India’s victory hopes. The Indian innings stumbled as Gavaskar was dismissed after Tea break and India stopped at 429/8 and the team lost by just 9 runs. The match may have been drawn, but this innings is considered to be the most unmatched innings in Indian cricket history.
Rahul Dravid & nbsp;
Shubman Gill & Nbsp;
In the 2025 Test series, Shubman Gill played such an innings against the England team, which will be remembered for a long time. Playing ahead of the score of 114* on the second day of Edgbaston Test, Gill scored a tremendous innings of 269 runs and scored a double century of his first Test.
This innings not only became Gill’s personal best score, but he also demolished many records. This is the biggest score of any Indian batsman in England. He broke the record of 179 runs scored by Mohammad Azharuddin in 1990, which was the best score of an Indian captain in England.
Gill shared a 203 -run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja, then brought the innings to 500 with Washington Sundar. In this innings of 387 balls, Gill has completely brought the Indian innings to a suitable position.
