Manipur infiltration: In the Rajya Sabha, BJP MP Maharaja Sanjaoba Leshemba demanded to identify and deport illegal migrants by implementing the National Register (NRC) on Thursday (March 27, 2025) to protect Manipur from demographic imbalance.
Raising this issue during the Zero Hour in the Upper House, BJP MP Lisamba said that due to the current law and order situation in Manipur, it would not be favorable to make any changes in the existing electoral areas of the state. He said, ‘Unusual and irrational growth of villages in Kangpokpi, Tenganaul, Chandel, Churachandpur and Ferjawal districts from 1969 to 2024 increased’.
‘Growth of 593 villages is unusual’
He said, ‘This number was 731 in 1969, which increased to 1624 in 2024, while the growth of 593 villages is unusual. This increase in the number of villages in about 50 years is 122 percent ‘. Lesamba said that in contrast, the number of villages in Naga dominated areas increased from 527 to 576. The increase in the number of Naga villages is only 49 i.e. only nine percent ‘.
‘Illegal migrants attempted to infiltrate Indian terrain’
He further said that illegal migrants are trying to infiltrate into the Indian territory and taking advantage of the part of the Indo-Myanmar International border, illegal infiltration where fencing is not possible. Lisamba said that after infiltration, these illegal migrants are also interfering in electoral politics.
The BJP MP requested the government that before proceeding for any change in the current election constituencies, it is necessary to identify illegal migrants by implementing NRC with the base year 1951 and it is necessary to identify illegal migrants and deport them in their countries’. He said that this is the only logical solution otherwise there will be a huge demographic imbalance in Manipur and the original inhabitants will have to suffer a lot in their own motherland.
